Accounting Manager, NJII Financial Operations

Supervises: Contracts Manager

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Director of NJII Financial Operations, the NJII Accounting
Manager is responsible for coordination of the process, preparation and review of NJII, and its component
units, interim and annual audited financial statements and other periodic management, federal, and state
required reports. The Accounting Manager would provide accounting analysis and reconciliation support,
supervision and review to other NJII Financial Operations staff, training for business unit staff and
assistance in financial and management reporting. This position is responsible for assisting in daily
executing all aspects of financial operations of New Jersey Innovation Institute.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for assisting the Director of NJII Financial Operations in successfully implementing and managing the financial operations of NJII including, but not limited to:
  • Coordinates and supervises NJII Financial Operations staff in preparation and review of monthly journal entries, account analyses and reconciliations.
  • Preparation and review of interim and year-end stand-alone, management and consolidated financial statements and reports, including management discussion and analysis, and footnotes.
  • Oversee department’s adherence to interim and year-end close and report timetables.
  • Operationalizes and generates system-generated reports, data uploads and downloads, and data management.
  • Monitors non-grant, current restricted and designated, funds on the general ledger to ascertain that funds are expended in accordance with prescribed purpose.
  • Assist in analyze of NJII’s cash flow data, preparation and review of projections and variance reporting, including non-grant and grant billing and collection analyses.
  • Participate in the preparation of all year-end external financial statement reporting in collaboration with General Accounting Office personnel and external auditors.
  • Serve as liaison between external auditors, NJII administration and business units to facilitate providing documentation and support to external auditors.
  • Serve as a facilitator and expeditor to assist NJII business unit leaders in resolving and/or removing financial operational obstacles
  • Assist in coordinating gathering data, preparation and review of NJII’s annual Form 990 and any other necessary tax filings
  • Establish and monitor budgets for business divisions.
  • Ensure GASB, GAAP, Federal and State tax, and Uniform Guidance Rules and Regulations are adhered to during the course of NJII’s business activities.

Additional Functions:
• Train NJII Financial Operation’s staff and business unit staff to fully utilize systems technology.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the Director of NJII Financial Operations.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Education/Degree Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or business with emphasis in accounting.

Years of Experience Required

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting management.


• Knowledge/Skills Required

  • Experience in non-profit and for-profit accounting.
  •  Experience in grant and contract budgeting, accounting and compliance requirements.
  •  Advanced experience in utilizing computerized accounting and general ledger systems.
  • Experience in preparation and audit of financial statements under GASB and FASB.
  • Advanced knowledge of the use of spreadsheets, database software, query and report writing tools; including Microsoft Office applications and data warehousing software.
  • Able to work on multiple complex projects, excellent time-management skill and demonstrated ability to meet progressive deadlines.
  • Detail oriented, accurate, strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work additional hours that are necessary to complete tasks and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Certified Public Accountant
• Master’s Degree in Finance or Accounting
• Experience with Ellucian’s Banner ERP software
