Lead Scientist- Cell and Gene Therapy Process Development

Position Summary – The Process Development Scientist will be working for NJII on biopharmaceutical innovation challenges and industry sponsored projects. This role will be key in developing novel processes for cell and gene therapy projects funded. The individual will lead activities in process development and will be responsible for evaluation and implementation of unit operations and technologies for manufacturing of therapies. 

Person Reports To –Executive Director of the Biopharma iLab

Supervises – The position requires ability to manage teams in a matrix structure. In the medium to long term, this position may require managing direct reports. 

Essential Functions –

•Lead the Cell and Gene Therapy Manufacturing Center (“Center”) in developing the technical and scientific strategies for its CAR T-cell  development projects, including the implementation of emerging technologies 

•Act as a scientific liaison between the manufacturing and research personnel of partnering organizations 

•Conduct technical evaluation of industry-funded projects

•Develop and write grant proposals oriented to industry, academic, and government entities 

•Fulfill the role of subject matter expert for the Center

Additional Functions – 

•Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities

Prerequisite Qualifications – 

1. Education/Degree Required- Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Biochemical Engineering or related fields

2. Years of Experience Required- A minimum of 5 years of experience with cellular and gene therapies

3. Essential Characteristics

  • Knowledge in T-cell biology and Immunology
  • Strong technical skills related to viral vectors for gene delivery, gene editing, process control, and automation
  • Comfortable developing, implementing, and executing activities related to small and automated large scale processes, including but not limited to, experimental protocols, process evaluations, analytical methods, and implementing emerging technologies
  • Understanding of analytical techniques and regulatory requirements, such as GMP standards, related to the production of cell and gene therapies
  • Technical writing skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to learn and act on dynamic information at a rapid pace
  • Team player with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously 

Preferred Qualifications – 

•Experience in Oncology

•Familiarity working on relevant lab scale equipment, including but not limited to, the Xuri Bioreactor, the Beckman Coulter FACS Flow cytometer, and the Miltenyi Prodigy
