Interface Engineer

Position Summary –

NJII’s Integration Engineers promote the interoperability in the Healthcare IT industry, providing flexible interoperability solutions to healthcare providers by interfacing with numerous software platforms. The Integration Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing and deploying interoperability components, with a focus on New Jersey Health Information Network (NJHIN) and interfacing with Trusted Data Sharing Organizations (TDSOs).

May lead Project Assistants and may serve as a project team lead


Essential Functions –

  • Develop, install and configure HL7 interfaces based on required workflow and configuration, including ADT, Billing, Results, Orders and Scheduling interfaces
  • Install a full range of software solutions and work with IT resources to ensure products are deployed successfully in the field
  • Use project management tools, including project plans and implementation checklists, to provide insight on interface implementation progress and to ensure that project deadlines are completed within expected timeframe
  • Support required code changes and maintenance of interfaces after go-live, including after hour support on an as-needed basis
  • Design and implement a customized testing strategy for all new interfaces, depending on customer's workflow and configuration capabilities
  • Act as main point of contact for interface validation, ensuring that all required interface functionality has been tested appropriately using a dynamic approach and methodical testing habits
  • Manage any custom development request for interface functionality outside of the scope of our standard interface templates, including SQL stored procedure updates and scripting changes through Python or VB.NET
  • Create and execute necessary commands in SQL Server to augment installations, assist in troubleshooting and import and update client data as needed

Additional Duties –

  • Engage and provide input to the development of national standards and best practices regarding data exchange, with particular emphasis on HL7 and Web Services standards.
  • Represent NJII at national standards meetings and conferences.

May be required to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.


Prerequisite Qualifications –

  1. Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required in Computer Science, Health Sciences or related field.

*Additional job related experience/and/or education may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


  1. Experience Requirements

Minimum 3 years of Integration or Interface related work experience in computing and/or a healthcare environment.


  1. Knowledge/Skills Requirements



  • Knowledge of interface engines, such as MDLink, Mirth, Cloverleaf, Rhapsody, eGate or Iguana recommended
  • Knowledge of EMR systems such as EPIC, Meditech, Cerner and McKesson
  • Knowledge of networking concepts, such as VPNs, firewall/router configuration, FTP and SFTP file transfers
  • Knowledge of data translation concepts (e.g. Crosswalk tables)
  • Knowledge of SQL Server databases with an emphasis on SQL queries
  • Knowledge of an object-oriented programming language, such as VB.NET, C#, Python scripting, etc. recommended
  • Knowledge of national initiatives such as Meaningful Use, and their impact on IIS and health information exchange.
  • Knowledge of standardized IIS business rules and best practices.
  • Knowledge of public health reporting standards.
  • Knowledge of testing and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Knowledge of information system analysis, design and data management concepts.
  • Knowledge of health related vendor products such as EHRs.

  • Experience with relevant software and computer query and reporting tools, such as SQL, Crystal Reports, Business Objects or Excel to run reports.
