AWS Engineer

Position Summary –

This position will be responsible for the Installation/configuration, operation and maintenance of AWS environments, provisioning of Cloud infrastructure, systems configuration, deployment of patches, and implementation of security controls, supporting upgrades, and troubleshooting issues.  The AWS Engineer will advise and partner with App Teams in building resilient cloud infrastructure that supports the initiatives of NJII.  The AWS Engineer is responsible for the operations of secure and highly available computing platforms, servers, and networks both physical and virtual.

Essential Functions –

Leverage technical expertise in Cloud computing and hosting concepts to advise and educate both technical and non-technical members of the team. Provide direct technical support for the development of project technical deliverables.

  • Develops, maintains, monitors, and supports the infrastructure environment and the resolution of systemic issues
  • Defines and implementing disaster recovery plans
  • Takes the lead on cloud recommendations and security readiness
  • Determines what ecosystem security features can be utilized to meet applicable security requirements
  • Work with NJII technical team and architect to implement, manage and secure cloud information systems
  • Defines improvements to increase system security/integrity, reliability and performance based on health check results
  • Seeks opportunities to improve and advance the overall security posture by conducting technical assessments aiming to replace legacy or inadequate security systems
  • Supports multiple systems or applications of medium to highly complex (complexity defined by size, technology used, and system feeds and interfaces) with multiple concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility
  • Manage LAN/telecom solutions and or products leveraged at NJII
  • Acts as the technical liaison between operations teams, engineers and architects, providing critical operational insight to upcoming implementations and strategies, including validation of ongoing solutions supportability.
  • Communicates events to stakeholders, IT teams, and leadership
  • Integrates solutions with other applications and platforms based on engineering requirements
  • Develops plans and performs routine maintenance tasks for infrastructure systems such as backups, patch management and hot fixes
  • Monitors database maintenance and provides appropriate recommendations, when required
  • Reviews and certifies support documents
  • Recommends settings changes to the operating system to improve performance and reliability
  • Develops, maintains, recommends, documents, and supports tools and back-end utilities to provide capacity planning management
  • Monitors database security integrity, performance and recommends changes
  • Reports security issues when appropriate and gathers required information
  • Analyzes audit trails to detect systematic security violations
  • Contributes and ensures compliance with policies, procedures and standards
  • Ensures IT system security baselines are met and security improvements are implemented across the server environments. Ensures adherence to security requirements.
  • Analyzes data from monitoring activities and define comprehensive, system wide improvements
  • Generates and validates network/telecom system baselines, including validation of documentation

  • Adjusts bandwidth on routine basis and provides input to capacity planning activities
  • Monitors Technology Component Performance or LAN, WAN, Wireless, DAS/telecom system


Additional Functions –

  • Develops new alerts and monitoring techniques based on engineering requirements
  • Recommends and develops solutions for improvement of help desk procedures
  • Makes recommendations to improve security and participates in investigations as needed
  • Coordinates the design, implementation, and execution of backup and disaster recovery plan for infrastructure solutions
  • Develops documentation for new infrastructure solutions
  • Evaluates future technologies and makes recommendations for software and hardware upgrades
  • Provides technical guidance, coaching/mentoring to team members
  • Actively monitors and publishes the availability plan discussing the ability of the IT infrastructure to meet the availability requirements of the business
  • Works with vendors and architects to understand their technology roadmaps
  • Works across teams to ensure network/telecom system upgrades and service pack deployments are implemented with minimal impact to production operation
  • Recommends implementation of updated network/telecom systems to deliver cost benefits without reducing production performance and availability



Prerequisite Qualifications –

  1. Education/Degree/Certifications Required –
    • Bachelors Degree, Computer Information Systems
    • CCNA – Certification
    • MCSE – Certification
    • AWS Professional-Level Certification


  1. Years of Experience Required
    • Minimum 10 years of experience managing windows, linux, server environments


  1. Knowledge/Skills Required
    • The incumbent will have strong communication skills
    • Minimum 7 years of Engineer level knowledge in Amazon Web Services cloud and Internet facing applications with a focus on security
    • Solid technical background in a hosted services environment including infrastructure networks, hardware, software and telecommunications
    • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code using tools like AWS CloudFormation templates
    • Proficiency in using AWS EC2, Load Balancers
    • Demonstrated proficiency in Linux, hand on and related debugging
    • Minimum 3 years support engineering or system admin experience on Linux and Windows systems
    • Good working knowledge/experience on highly distributed virtual environment, networking, s/w build and deployment process
    • A solid grasp of networking fundamentals, preferably including hands-on experience with load balancers, switches, routers, etc.
    • Experience in a 24/7 production environment
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-intensity, Agile Scrum team work environment and exhibit flexibility as innovation is implemented
    • Engineer level knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Exchange 2010 and SQL Server
    • Engineer level knowledge of security as it relates to cloud based infrastructure
    • Experience using automated monitoring tools
    • Ability to identify incident trends in order to elevate incidents in accordance with standard protocols
    • Able to gather relevant information systematically to troubleshoot and resolve issues
    • Excellent attention to detail, testing and documentation
